FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Authorities released the identity of the man who died after Saturday’s shooting in Franklin County, as well as additional information about the woman hospitalized following another shooting reported from Pittsylvania County that same night.
The Pittsylvania County Communication Center says deputies were dispatched to a residence on Burton Lake Road in Chatham on Saturday, Sept. 5, at approximately 12 a.m. for a woman who had been shot.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was transported to the hospital with a life-threatening injury. As of Saturday afternoon, the woman is still hospitalized, but authorities say she is a 58-year-old woman from Fieldale, Virginia.
In addition, the sheriff’s office says another shooting was also reported at the woman’s home along Barbour Lane in the Snow Creek area of Franklin County. Deputies arrived on scene around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday to find a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside the mobile home.
Authorities identified the man as 54-year-old Ricky Lee Southern of Reidsville, North Carolina
Further investigation led to the arrest of 58-year-old Forrest Christopher Fielder of Chatham for charges of second-degree murder in connection with Southern’s death, as well as use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to the sheriff’s office. He is reportedly being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail.
The shootings are still under investigation, but the sheriff’s office says there is no further threat to the public.
