A Memphis man was charged with murder amid the crime wave that has resulted in a record number of homicides this year in the city.

Sydney Baskerville, 35, was arrested and charged in an Oct. 6 shooting, the Memphis Police Department reported on Saturday.

Baskerville was charged with first-degree murder, criminal attempt first-degree murder, employment of a firearm during a dangerous felony and convicted felon in possession of a deadly weapon, police said.

The shooting occurred last Tuesday evening in South Memphis on the 1200 block of Azalia Street. The male victim was taken to Regional One and pronounced dead. Police did not release the victim’s name.

Memphis has experienced a wave of violent crime this year. Police reported 233 homicides in the city by Friday, surpassing the former record of 228 murders and justifiable homicides set in all of 2016, The Commercial Appeal reported Friday
